The flames drew closer as a Paterson father held his 3-year-old daughter over the railing of a third-floor fire escape Sunday morning. Then saviors arrived. Firefighters Robert Santore and Brian Hirschmanner told the dad to hold tight, then scaled the fire escape and rescued both. UPDATE: Fierce frigid winds fanned a furious fire that engulfed one home and damaged another Monday night in Garfield, displacing 13 residents. Two cats were rescued, as well. VIDEO: Eight families were displaced by an intense fire that destroyed a Passaic multi-family home Friday night. No injuries were reported. Flames blew through the roof, part of which collapsed less than a half-hour after the four-alarm blaze broke out on the second floor of the wood-frame building at Hope and Highland avenues around 8 p.m. "Thank God everyone is out, safe and accounted for," Mayor Hector Carlos Lora said. Nearly a dozen people were displaced in a Bayonne fire early Christmas Morning. Flames consumed the rear portion of the first floor of 9 Andrew St., when crews arrived around 2 a.m. Friday, Dec. 25, Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver said. Firefighters stretched multiple hand-lines in to the building, keeping the blaze from spreading to the second floor and adjacent building. Firefighter Rescued After Wall Collapses In Passaic Multi-Family Blaze
Firefighters rescued one of their own in a blaze that ripped through a three-story brick walkup in Passaic during the overnight snowstorm, authorities said. The firefighter, who was rescued after a wall collapsed in the 4th Street building, was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson. Five children were among at least 15 people from five different families displaced by an overnight Jersey City fire.
