'We Simply Cannot Compete': Store Closes After 34 Years In Westchester
After more than three decades in business, a Northern Westchester store has decided to bow out amid changing times.
Wondrous Things, a gift shop located in Briarcliff Manor at 1159 Pleasantville Rd., announced on Wednesday, Oct. 4 that it would soon be permanently closing after 34 years.
Although the store did not specify a closing date, a closing sale will begin on Thursday, Oct. 5, the owners said.
In their closing announcement, the owners said that they were unable to keep up with the modern state of retail.

Founder Of Caldor, With First Store In Westchester, Dies
Fairfield County entrepreneur, philanthropist, and founder of the Caldor department store chain, Carl Bennett, has died at the age of 101.
Bennett died at his home in Greenwich on Thursday, Dec. 23.
The Caldor empire came to be while working with his late wife, Dorothy Bennett, who together turned an $8,000 military salary savings into a chain of discount department stores that spanned from the 1950s to the mid-1980s when he sold his 120 store business to Associated Dry Goods.

Workers in downstate New York are all getting a holiday bonus this year, as minimum wage rates get bumped for the third straight year.
As of Friday, Dec. 31, minimum wage workers in Westchester, Suffolk, and Nassau counties will see a bump in their paychecks as their hourly wages will rise to a minimum of $15, putting them on par with employees at large firms in New York City, which has been at that benchmark for three years.
Minimum wage employees in those counties had previously been getting $14 an hour.
