Hold onto your hats: The National Weather Service issued a rare February tornado warning and wind gusts up to 70 mph for parts of southern New Jersey.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean counties on Friday.

A fast-moving storm moving through the areas could produce wind gusts as strong as 70 mph, along with hail up to three-quarters of an inch in diameter, the weather service said.

Friday afternoon, emergency crews and police were called to Route 34 near Newman Springs Road in Colts Neck on reports of trees and wires down. Route 34 was shut down due to wires across the roadway.

The severe weather pattern was moving toward Cherry Hill by late morning. Earlier Friday, the storm downed trees and power lines in Philadelphia and Wilmington, Delaware.

MFK Weather Forecasting & Consulting reported: "Could have some severe weather on the way. Tornado warning issued in Southwest NJ. Stay alert this afternoon."

"A tornado warning in February is pretty significant," MLK Weather told Daily Voice.
