YORKTOWN HIEGHTS, N.Y. -- During a break in wrestling, Saturday, at the Yorktown Holiday Classic, Steven Bencosme taught classmate and first-year wrestler, Chris Hutter a move.
Hutter wasted little time in putting it to good use. He went out, executed it in his next match and registered his first varsity win. It was one of the highlights for Sleepy Hollow as the Headless Horsemen finished 4-2 and finished fifth -- with a 54-38 win over Carmel -- in the tournament.
Gabe Palacios and Bencosme each went 6-0 and Edwin Jimenez finished with a 5-1 record. Somers defeated Westlake, Putnam Valley and Dobbs Ferry in pool wrestling, but lost to Somers and Croton.
The trio have been leaders in the room and on the mat this season. Sleepy Hollow has a young team so Bencosme, Palacios and Jimenez know they need to perform at a high level whether during a match or in practice.
We know that the younger guys are looking up to us so we have to set the example, Bencosme said. The younger guys are all improving every day. We wrestled well in this tournament and it was good for the younger guys because it gave them the opportunity to wrestle six matches and give it their all.
Bencosme was impressed with Hutter and happy for him after the first-year wrestle pinned his opponent after just learning the move. Palacios, who only allowed one point in six matches, has raised his level this year, executing a move each time he goes with it.
Gabe has added a good move that he had trouble hitting last year, Bencosme said. Hes been hitting it all the time. He worked on it all off season. Hes been to every open mat, no matter what school its at.
Edwins stamina was great this weekend. In the third period of all of his matches, he was still going at full speed.
Not only was Bencosme pleased, Sleepy Hollow coach Brian Tompkins was in agreement with his wrestler. Coach Tompkins spoke about the young wrestlers and what a great job they did in stepping up and some getting their first wins, Bencosme said.
