Madison Police Patrolman Patrick Strafaci responded “within seconds” to the area of Main Street near Station Road after a caller stated that a man was lying unresponsive on the sidewalk around 12:10 p.m., authorities said.
Strafaci evaluated the 53-year-old patient, a Madison resident, and determined that he was not breathing, did not have a pulse, and had gone into cardiac arrest.
Strafaci alerted Madison Dispatch and had just initiated lifesaving measures when a passerby, another Madison resident and Registered Nurse, stopped to help, police said.
Morris County EMS and Madison Fire Department arrived a short time later and administered several shocks to the patient with an automated external defibrillator (AED), causing him to regain a pulse.
The man was taken to Morristown Medical Center and is recovering, police said.
“The quick response and action by all first responders, the nurse who assisted emergency responders, and the witness who called 9-1-1, ultimately gave this patient another chance at life”, Acting Chief John R. Miscia said.
