Officers were called to the 500 block of Hanna Place SE on Feb. 14, where an armed man barricaded himself inside after they attempted to serve an arrest warrant, reportedly for animal cruelty offenses.

During the incident, multiple shots were fired by the man, with three officers struck during the barrage of gunfire, leaving them with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries that they were recovering from on Wednesday afternoon.

"I had the opportunity to visit the officers this morning," Smith said. "The officers are in good spirits and seem to be okay. I just wanted everyone to know where they are with their recoveries."

The man was still barricaded as of 3 p.m. on Wednesday, as there continues to be a massive police presence in the area. KIPP DC LEAP Academy was dismissed early out of precaution due to the standoff.
