Police: Long Island Motorcyclist Driving Through Red Light Killed After Crash With Uber

A motorcyclist who ran a red light was killed overnight in a crash involving a Uber on Long Island, police said.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 1 in Huntington Station at the intersection of Jericho Turnpike and Melville Road, Suffolk County Police said.

Gerson Mendez-Cruz, 20, of Greenlawn, was operating a 2004 Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound on Jericho Turnpike when he rode through a red light at the intersection of Melville Road and collided with the Uber, police said. The Uber, a 2018 Ford, had been traveling northbound on Melville Road.

Mendez-Cruz was transported to Huntington Hospital in serious condition and pronounced dead later in the morning. 

A 22-year-old female passenger in the Uber was transported to the same hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The Uber driver, Felix Perez, 24, of Levittown, was not injured.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to contact the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.
