Ronkonkoma Man ID'd After Apparent Shirley Drowning At Smith Point County Park Outer Beach
Police are investigating the death of a man who was pulled unresponsive from water on Long Island. A Suffolk County Park Ranger was patrolling on Outer Beach in Smith Point County Park when he was notified that a man was in distress in the water at noontime Sunday, Aug. 11. The officer and a good Samaritan immediately attempted to reach the man using a life ring, but he was located unresponsive by Suffolk County lifeguards on jet skis. A man pulled from the water on Long Island died from an apparent drowning. Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers aboard Marine Mike responded to the Great South Bay at Fire Island National Seashore in Shirley, just west of Smith Point Bridge, at approximately 10:55 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16. Homicide detectives are investigating after human remains were found on a Long Island beach. The discovery was made at around 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 6, at Smith Point County Park in Shirley, according to Suffolk County Police. Park employees told a 911 dispatcher that a woman had found what appeared to be a human bone. Detectives later found the bone in the sand. A Long Island man was rescued after being stranded on a raft for hours. The rescue was made overnight on Sunday, Aug. 23 at Narrow Bay in Mastic Beach. Motorists have been advised that there will be a four-hour closure on the Smith Point Bridge over the weekend for the annual triathlon. The Suffolk County Police Department issued an alert cautioning that from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4, the Smith Point Bridge will be closed for the Smith Point Triathlon.
