Firefighters Lead Six To Safety, 26 Displaced In Newark Blaze A fire that quickly went to two alarms burned through a multifamily home in Newark Saturday night, officials said.  The blaze started around 9:50 p.m. at 168 Sherman Ave. Most of the residents managed to escape the three-story building on their own, but firefighters found six people in the basement and led them to safety.  The Red Cross said it was assisting 24 people from seven families. A total of 26 people and eight families were affected by the fire, Newark officials said.  The cause is under investigation by the Newark Fire Division's Investigation Unit.

Woman Killed In South Orange Fire Was Once Victim Of Home Invasion The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has identified the victim in a deadly fire in South Orange early Friday. The blaze broke out at 231 Ward Place around 2:40 a.m. The fire left the three-story, single-family home heavily damaged. Paterson Resident, 76, Killed In Fire Authorities were investigating a Paterson fire that killed a 76-year-old resident despite neighbors' efforts to rescue him. The three-alarm fire broke out just after 6:30 p.m Tuesday at 650 East 26th Street. The body of Russel Mahan was found inside the severely damaged two-family home, authorities said. No other injuries were reported. There was no immediate indication of what may have caused the fire. Dad, Neighbors Save Kids From Jersey City Fire: Report Fire gutted a multi-family Jersey City home Friday morning, but a far greater tragedy was averted by a quick-acting father and some helpful neighbors, WABC 7 reported.  The fire, at a home on Gates Avenue, broke out around 11 a.m. A resident "did drop three children out of the window and onto an awning," Chief Steven McGill told the station. Neighbors on the street helped catch the children.  The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
