RYE, N.Y. -- John DiLorenzo received a call from his brother, Chris, Wednesday night asking him for some assistance at the 86th annual Westchester County Swimming Championships.
Chris DiLorenzo, the Pocantico Hills Swim & Dive Team coach, told his younger brother he would be a volunteer timer at the meet. The 17-year-old John DiLorenzo gladly obliged and took his turn among the numerous volunteer timers Thursday night.
He just called me and told me I would be a timer so I said, Okay, said the Hackley senior-to-be said and Tarrytown resident. Meet director Paul McClintock explained that each night at the swimming championships, teams are assigned timing shifts.
Throughout the week, it was parents handling the timing assignments. DiLorenzo was the only teenager volunteering Thursday. He was assigned to lane four and worked with Terry Heller. She is the wife of Dave Heller, the veteran referee of the meet.
She was a really nice lady and really polite, said DeLorenzo of Mrs. Heller. She told me what I needed to do and helped me out when I needed it.
Once his half-hour shift was over, DiLorenzo handed the stopwatch to his brother and went to relax with the Pocantico Hills team.
