The Time list compared wealth through a wide range of time periods.

Mansa Musa, the king of Timbuktu who was described as "richer than anyone could describe" ranks No. 1. He died in 1337.

Ranking No. 10 is Mongolian emperor Genghis Khan, who died in 1227.

After acquiring his fortune through Standard Oil, Rockefeller, who died in 1937, built his family estate, Kykuit, in Sleepy Hollow overlooking the Hudson River. Since its construction in 1913, the estate has housed four generations of Rockefellers and is open to the public.
