Twenty-seven-year-old Savonn Dangerfield of Hempstead received his sentence of 15 years to life in prison on Tuesday, May 14, the Nassau County District Attorney announced.

Six years before, in October 2018, Jeffrey Lee, age 23, was walking with his girlfriend on Dartmouth Street in Hempstead.

Just after noon, near the intersection of Stewart Avenue, Dangerfield walked up to Lee and shot him twice.

Lee, who was from Roosevelt, was later pronounced dead at NYU Langone Hospital Long Island.

The DA said that multiple shell casings and a 9mm semi-automatic pistol were found at the scene; Dangerfield was located in Ohio in May 2019 and extradited back to Nassau County.

In March 2024, he pleaded guilty to the following charges:

  • Murder, second-degree; and
  • Criminal possession of a weapon, two counts.

“Savonn Dangerfield wanted to get back at 23-year-old Jeffrey Lee after a perceived slight…[He] caught up to Lee on Dartmouth Street and brutally gunned him down in the middle of the afternoon in front of his girlfriend,” said DA Anne T. Donnelly.

“After the shooting, the defendant took off for Ohio to try to escape the consequences of what he had done, but law enforcement caught up with him. Now he will pay for his crimes in a prison cell.”
