He pursued the defenseman into Prep’s zone, and his forechecking resulted in a mistake that gave New Rochelle a goal.
It was one of many excellent plays by Barry in the varsity hockey game the Ice Hutch.
Barry, who was serving the penalty for goalie Greg Feliu, finished with two goals and two assists. He now the team's No. 2 scorer, with 12 goals and 11 assists. Linemate Chris Ramondelli, who had a hat trick, is the team scoring leader.
“I was watching the action from the box,” Barry said. “I wanted to get out there quick, and I knew where I wanted to be so I could try to get a goal or be an offensive threat.”
Now in his fourth year on varsity and second skating on the No. 1 forward line, Barry has established himself as an impact player for the Huguenots.
“He opens up the ice,” Ramondelli said. “Brett can pass, he can shoot, he draws people to him. He plays all-around really well.”
Barry was a winger last year, but has moved to center this year. Ramondelli said Barry made the move after an injury to a teammate early in the season. As a result, Barry is even more of a threat, either to score or set up Ramondelli or Mark Umbro.
In the first period, Barry got New Rochelle on the board. He took a pass from Ramondelli at the New Rochelle blue line, skated up the right wing and into Fordham Prep’s zone. Once Barry crossed the Fordham Prep blue line, he angled left and ripped a wrist shot in, to even the score at 1-1.
“We had a slow start, but a goal always helps with momentum and it gets you back in the game,” Barry said.
