Born in Washington, D.C., Callahan was raised in the motion picture industry, since his family co-founded Universal Pictures. He joined Warner Brothers Pictures after college.
In 1952, Callahan turned to advertising and joined SSC&B Advertising. He founded Callahan Research in 1970, and later he merged with E.J. Wolf Associates to form Wolf/Altschul/Callahan. Upon his retirement, he created William Callahan Research.
He is survived by his son, Raymond Callahan and daughter-in-law Bonnie Callahan of Coral Springs, Fla.; a brother Robert Callahan, of Stamford, Conn.; granddaughters Ashley Rae of New York City and Alison Reid of Coral Springs; grandson Steve of Washington; and stepdaughter Jennifer Braverman Underweiser of Scarsdale.
Callahan was predeceased by his parents, William J. "Jim" and Helen (Cochrane) Callahan.
