A sailor who hails from New York has done what only a small number of people have done — sailed around the world solo.
Twenty-nine-year-old Cole Brauer has made history.
The Long Island sailor, who grew up in Springs, East Hampton, became the first American woman to race solo nonstop around the world on Thursday, March 7.
She placed second in the Global Solo Challenge, which a total of 16 avid sailors signed up to compete in, after launching off from A Coruña, Spain on October 29, 2023.

Woman Rescued After Sailboat Overturns On Long Island
A woman was rescued from the waters off Long Island after her Sunfish sailboat capsized.
The incident took place in Southampton around 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17 in Peconic Bay near Robbins Island.
The woman, Barbara Gilman, age 56, from Georgia, was able to call for help, and Southampton Patrol Units, Southampton Marine Patrol, US Coast Guard, and state police boat responded along with Southampton and North Sea Fire Departments and Southampton Volunteer Ambulance, said Lt. Area HS Sports Standout Killed, Girl Critically Injured In Single-Vehicle Crash
A high school sports standout in Connecticut was killed in a single-vehicle crash that also left a 16-year-old girl in critical condition.
New Haven County resident Ryan Rutledge, age 17, of Southbury, died on Monday, April 5, after his Jeep went off the roadway around 10:35 p.m., and hit a wire rope guardrail, before the vehicle traveled down an embankment and into the Pomperaug River, said the Southbury Police.
Both Rutledge, and his passenger, were ejected from the vehicle and found in the Pomperaug River.
