A 63-year-old Long Island man has been arrested for an alleged hit-and-run crash that killed a 35-year-old pedestrian.

Philip Tavares, of Oakdale, was arrested on Wednesday, March 11, for the crash that killed a pedestrian on Friday, March 6, on Hawthrone Avenue in Central Islip, said the Suffolk County Police.

According to investigators, Tavares allegedly struck Terrance Tuffini, of Central Islip and then fled the scene. Tuffini was then struck by a 2007 Toyota Yaris, operated by Mary Doherty, and was struck again by a 2008 Dodge Nitro driven by Jonathan Hernandez.

Tuffini was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he was pronounced dead.

Doherty, 55, of Central Islip, and Hernandez, 25, of Brentwood were not injured.

Tavares was charged with leaving the scene of an incident resulting in death.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday, March 12.
