A man asleep behind the wheel on Vets Highway in Holbrook was arrested for alleged impaired driving after he was caught by police blocking traffic on the busy roadway in the middle of the night.

Suffolk County Sheriff Deputies arrested Bellport resident Devaunte Maynes, 25, shortly before 3 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, when he was blocking traffic after allegedly falling asleep in the driver’s seat in a left turn lane.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Maynes was asleep at the wheel for multiple cycles of a green turn arrow signals. He proceeded to fail multiple Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and a breathalyzer determined his blood alcohol content was .10 percent, more than the legal limit.

Investigators said that Maynes was also operating his vehicle knowing that his license was suspended a dozen times on different occasions.

At the time of his arrest, Maynes was also found in possession of alprazolam and marijuana.

Maynes was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, seventh-degree possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. No return court date has been announced.
