Hempstead resident Corey Crisp, age 44, received his sentence of 20 years to life on Wednesday, March 20 for the January 2023 incident, according to the Nassau County District Attorney.
On January 6, 2023, Crisp, who is believed to be a Bloods gang member, was at the Hempstead apartment building where his girlfriend lived, located at 600 Fulton Avenue.
At around 6 p.m., he saw another man and pulled a small knife from his sweatshirt, extending the blade.
The DA’s Office said the victim began to run, with Crisp chasing him into the lobby.
As the pair crossed the building’s lobby, they each took out semi-automatic handguns. Crisp fired his down a crowded hallway.
His bullet hit the wall and continued past both the victim and more than half a dozen other civilians – including a baby in a stroller – before landing in another wall at the end of the hallway.
Crisp fled the scene and was arrested three weeks later.
“He placed innocent people in harm’s way with total disregard,” said DA Anne T. Donnelly, stating also that Crisp is a mandatory persistent violent felony offender.
“Wednesday’s sentence will make our communities safer.”
Nearly a year after his arrest, Crisp was convicted of the following charges:
- Attempted assault;
- Criminal possession of a weapon, second- and third-degree;
- Criminal use of a firearm; and
- Reckless endangerment.
He was acquitted of two other charges, including attempted murder.
