Woman Killed Driving On Flooded Roadway In Capital Region
A potent, late autumn storm that pounded the region has turned deadly after a woman was killed by floodwaters. Emergency crews in Greene County were called at around 10:15 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, for a vehicle submerged in floodwater in Catskill, near Cauterskill Road. State Police said troopers found a Chevrolet SUV off the east shoulder of the roadway submerged in water near Kaaterskill Creek. New System Packed With Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Could Cause Flooding
A new system taking aim at the region will bring thunderstorms and heavy rain that could cause flooding. Current forecast models project the system will arrive from west to east starting late Thursday morning, Aug. 10. Heavy rain is expected to begin in the New York City area, Hudson Valley, and Capital regions, and western Connecticut around midday Thursday and later in the afternoon in Massachusetts and eastern Connecticut. As rounds of showers and storms sweep through the region, a Tornado Watch has now been issued for parts of New York. The watch is in effect until 11 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7 in the counties shown in yellow. In New York, those counties are: Sullivan Broome Chenango Delaware Otsego Tioga Severe thunderstorms are expected to continue through the afternoon and in Monday evening. A frontal system bringing multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts to the area will bring both a flash flood and severe weather threat, according to the National Weather Service. Storm activity will continue at times throughout the day on Monday, Aug. 7 into Tuesday, Aug. 8. New rounds of storms with localized downpours and risks of flash flooding are taking aim at the region. The time frame for the first system is Thursday night, July 13 into Friday, July 14 with the approach of a frontal system, according to the National Weather Service. An upper-level low-pressure system will bring isolated to scattered thunderstorms across the region, some of which could be severe. A few storms may bring heavy rain, gusty winds, and small hail a half-inch or less in diameter, according to the National Weather Service. Scattered thunderstorms, some severe, are moving across the region ahead of a strong cold front. Some of the storms, which began in the middle of the afternoon Friday, June 2, have been packed with heavy downpours, and gusty winds.
