Historic House Highlights West Nyack's Fall Festival Historic House Highlights West Nyack's Fall Festival
Historic House Highlights West Nyack's Fall Festival WEST NYACK, N.Y. -- Intermittent snow flurries and a stiff wind did not prevent locals from celebrating all things autumn at Sunday's 2015 Annual Fall Family Festival. Bundled kids scooped up pumpkins, painted faces, took hayrides, and wrote with dipped quills.  But the true highlight of the day was something less temporal than crafting or pumpkins. The community was treated to an "introduction" of the Vanderbilt-Budke house, a Dutch sandstone built by Jacob Vanderbilt about 1730. Believed to be the second-oldest house in Rockland County, it was lived in by the Vanderbilts until th…

People To People's Get Saucy! Fundraiser Cooks Up $10K NYACK, N.Y. -- The verbal sparring was seriously spicy at People to People's Third Annual Get Saucy! fundraiser but it was all in the name good fun and for an excellent cause. More than 125 attendees packed Nyack Seaport to watch "amateur" chefs and bakers compete to raise funds for the Nanuet-based charity that helps feed people. The fundraiser raked in $10,000. "We feed more than 4,000 people a year, and the numbers are going up every year," said Matt Rand, People to People's Board President. "We wish we could go our of business." Other than Rand's sober note…

Pennysaver 'No Haitians' Help Wanted Ad Sparks Outrage NEW CITY, N.Y. -- Public officials are condemning a healthcare company for taking out an advertisement in a Rockland County Pennysaver that blatantly discriminates against Haitians.  The ad, which was placed in the New City Pennysaver on Oct. 15 by Interim Healthcare Inc. says it is looking for LPN or RN nurses in West Haverstraw but specifies "no haitians" will be accepted. "This is outrageous discrimination in its purest form," said State Senator David Carlucci. "It is a direct violation of the Civil Rights Act and is completely illegal." He urged Pennysaver…

Grooming The Green At The Big Ball Yard Is No Small Task POMONA, N.Y.  -- You think you've got a big lawn? Ever think about the mowing manpower it takes to keep the grounds green and baseball game-ready at Provident Bank Park?  Turns out it's a pretty tireless job, one performed by groundskeeper Pete Lawless, who can spend up to eight hours a day caring for the acre and a half inside the ballpark, and another two acres outside the stadium, on the diesel-powered Toro Reel mower.  During the Boulders' season (which runs through mid September each year), it's a job that lasts from seven in the morning to the end of the game at night.  "Someti…
