“It’s a good thing there wasn’t anyone underneath at the time,” said Westwood Police Chief Frank Regino, who rushed to the scene. “It just gave way.”

Ambulances from Washington Township and Emerson, along with police and firefighters from Westwood and Emerson, converged at the corner of Emerson Road and Palisade Avenue in Westwood within minutes of the collapse, just before 4 o’clock this afternoon.

The deck pulled from the side of the house and crashed down in one piece.

The front side broke loose and came to rest against a tree.

“The infant has a couple of cuts,” said Regino, who called the mayor and other local officials with immediate updates. “Luckily, that’s about it.”

The chief said the borough building inspector would soon be out to inspect the damage.
