Trenton Animal Shelter Taken Over By City Police Department
Trenton Animal Shelter will now be overseen by the city's police department. The reorganization is part of an executive order meant to strengthen management and ease overcrowding. Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora's executive order also creates a new five-member animal welfare advisory board. Trenton Police Lt. Alexis Durlacher will call the shots as the shelter’s new chief. Dead Animal, 25 Dogs Found In Young Man's Home: Galloway Police
A Wildwood Crest man was arrested after more than two dozen dogs and cats were found living in poor conditions in Atlantic County, authorities said. Galloway Township police said 23-year-old Jason Millar was charged with cruelty to animals after officers went to a house on Zurich Avenue on Saturday, Feb. 10, to follow up on an animal complaint. Millar told officers he was the owner of the animals. Investigators found a dead dog, along with about 25 dogs and a cat "with insufficient access to food and water." The risk posed by deer in densely populated areas this particular time of year was tragically illustrated when one had to be put down in Glen Rock after being struck by a car. Deer Rescued From North Jersey Storm Drain
It was a team effort as responders rescued a deer from a storm drain in Demarest. Police who responded to several calls summoned borough DPW workers and both Demarest and Haworth firefighters to County Road and Eastview Terrace shortly before 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4. A South Jersey animal shelter has issued an alert after multiple dogs were bitten by a raccoon that later tested positive for the rabies virus. Deer Chased By Dog Dies After Crashing Through Window Of NJ Home
It came in as a possible burglary in progress but turned out to be a horrific accident. Sometime before dawn Wednesday, a deer being chased by a dog crashed through the window of a River Vale home, police said. The gravely wounded deer eventually died, Capt. Chris Bulger said. Animal control removed the carcass from the Coopers Lane home, he said. “The dog appeared to be fine and the deer showed no signs of injury from the dog,” the captain said. The dog’s owner and the homeowner “have been in contact and will handle the matter between them for the damage,” he said.

What's That Smell? Rabid Skunk Found In Central Jersey
The ninth rabid animal of 2021 has been found in Middlesex County, authorities said. The Middlesex County Office of Health Services is reporting that a skunk tested positive for rabies in Monroe Township in the vicinity of Schoolhouse Road and Galacia Way. It's the second rabid animal reported in Monroe this year, according to a press statement. On Dec. 2, a resident of Monroe reported an injured skunk in their yard to Animal Control. Dog Attack Sends 2 To Hospital In South Brunswick
Two people were hospitalized after being attacked by a family dog in South Brunswick on Tuesday, police said. A man in his 50s and woman in her 60s were bitten by the family dog, a pitbull, at a house on the 100 block of New Road, local police said. The victims were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, authorities said. Their conditions were not known as of Wednesday morning. Responders included local police, EMS and animal control officers.

Coyote 'Chasing People' In Middletown
Police in Central Jersey were responding to reports of a coyote chasing people. Middletown police were called about 10:30 a.m. about a coyote "running in the streets," hat was suspected to be rabid because of its erratic behavior. A frightened deer stranded in the ocean off of Long Branch was rescued Thursday by lifeguards, police and beach workers on jet-skis and paddle boards. Bat Tests Positive For Rabies In Piscataway
A bat has tested positive for rabies in Piscataway, authorities said. This is the third rabid animal found in Middlesex County this year and the first rabid animal in Piscataway in 2020, the Middlesex County Office of Health Services said in a press statement. The rabid bat was found inside a house near Rivercrest Drive and Ludlow Street on Thursday, county officials said.
