Parts of the Jersey Shore are on alert for minor coastal flooding this week, according to forecasters. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a coastal flood advisory for Atlantic, Cape May, and Ocean counties. Melanie, a folk singer-songwriter whose music took her from the Jersey Shore to international success in the 70's, has died at 76 years old. Melanie Safka died on Tuesday, Jan. 23, according to a Facebook post by her family. A cause of death was not given. The Long Branch native was born on Monday, Feb. 3, 1947, her IMDb page said. Her children called her a powerful performer and loving parent. Snow across New Jersey and Pennsylvania was expected to cause some travel disruptions Thursday, Dec. 7. Snow was already falling in the Lehigh Valley and Poconos as of 7:30 a.m., but according to the National Weather Service, flurries were headed into New Jersey. A propane tank is to blame for the home explosion that killed a 45-year-old Jersey Shore man on Tuesday, Oct. 31, authorities said. Kevin Thomas, 45, was found on his front lawn of 253 Neptune Dr., with serious burns, and airlifted to Temple Burn Center in Philadelphia after the explosion that turned into a fire ravaged his house, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Thousands of New Jersey residents were without power Sunday, Sept. 24, after Tropical Storm Ophelia. Nearly 13,000 residents were without power Saturday, Sept. 23, but as of Sunday morning, that number was down to approximately 4,000. The bulk of the outages were in Monmouth County, where 4,636 were in the dark as of 10:45 a.m., according to the JCPL outage map. In Ocean County, 352 JCPL customers were without power. Belmar Police ID Drowning Victim From Labor Day Rip Currents
Belmar police have identified a swimmer who drowned Sunday evening, Sept. 3. Gilberto Mendez Jr., 42, of Roselle Park, was swimming off Fifth Avenue just after 6 p.m. when he began struggling in rip currents, Belmar Borough police said. A new tropical system has developed and is expected to become a major hurricane threatening the East Coast by this weekend. Tropical Depression 13, now in the Central Atlantic is headed on a northwestern path, the National Hurricane Center said. A tornado watch is in effect for 10 counties in New Jersey until 11 p.m. Monday Aug. 7, according to the National Weather Service. The tornado watch includes Mercer, Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties, the NWS said. Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Train At Jersey Shore
A male was fatally struck by a train over the weekend at the Jersey Shore, NJ Transit officials confirmed. The victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was struck by a North Jersey Coast Line train just before stopping in Spring Lake around 3 a.m. Sunday, June 4, NJ Transit spokesman Kyalo Mulumba said.
