Garfield Teens Learn 'Epic' Lessons GARFIELD, N.J. — The task of educating Garfield youth about the dangers of drug and alcohol use is an epic one. The Empower Peers and Inspire Change club, aka EPIC, branched off of the Garfield Prevention Coalition. Both share a similar goal in promoting safe habits, but EPIC consists of high school members, advisor Amelia Gligoroska said. Kenyah Pickett, 32, was arrested Thursday after police said he was selling heroin out of an apartment on 19th street in Paterson, Passaic County Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik said. Paterson Man Sentenced To 18 Years In Prison For Armed Robbery PATERSON, N.J. — A judge sentenced a Paterson man to 18 years in prison Friday for an October 2012 armed robbery, authorities said. Willy Minaya, 28, must serve more than 15 years before he is eligible for parole, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes said. Minaya and co-defendant Emmanuel Rodriguez used a long screwdriver to rob a man sitting outside of a bar talking on his phone of his wallet and cellphone, Valdes said. They fled in their car but were chased down by Paterson police, she said. A jury convicted Minaya last February of robbery, theft and illegal weapons possession.

Construction workers using torches and patching leaks accidentally ignited the fire around 4 p.m. on the roof of the Ruby Lounge restaurant, which is connected to the Holiday Inn hotel on Route 46, Totowa Fire Chief Vincent Marciano said.
