Charles County Launches 'Drive Sober' Campaign With Free Uber Rides, Holiday Safety Push
The Charles County State’s Attorney’s Office (SAO) is bringing back its annual “Drive Sober” initiative for the fourth year, aiming to keep impaired drivers off the roads during one of the deadliest times of the year. Running from Nov. 25, 2024, to Jan. 1, 2025, the program offers holiday revelers an extra incentive to avoid drinking and driving: free or discounted Uber rides. On Thanksgiving Eve (Nov. 27), from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next morning, and again on New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31), drivers aged 21 and over can use a special Uber code—available on the SAO’s official “Drive Sober” webpage—…

Lexington Park Driver Charged For Fatal Rollover Crash With Unrestrained Children: Sheriff
Months after a violent rollover crash claimed the life of a child in Southern Maryland, a woman was arrested and charged, the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office announced. Lexington Park resident Ashley Nicole Nolan has been charged in an 18-count indictment by the Circuit Court for offenses that include negligent manslaughter for the March crash. Driver Charged With Murder After Striking Man With Truck In Lexington Park: State Police
A woman who allegedly ran down a man she was involved in an ongoing relationship with in St. Mary's County during a disagreement is facing murder and other charges following an investigation by Maryland State Police. Simone Stewart, 50, has been arrested in connection to the death of Demeatrum Scarborough, 53, who died on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Medstar Washington Hospital, one day after she ran him over with a truck. A La Plata woman who traveled more than 40 miles from Maryland to Virginia before stopping for a nap at a traffic light is facing another DUI offense, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office. Shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, deputies were called to investigate a possible drunk driver, where they found Amy Cooksey, 59, parked at the traffic light in front of Sheetz on Kings Highway unconscious behind the wheel. A pair with a curious business plan are behind bars in Virginia after attempting to clean up by selling stolen Tide detergents "like drugs" in Stafford, according to the sheriff's office. Police Sergeant In Maryland Pleads Guilty To Driving While Impaired, Sheriff Says
A suspended sergeant with the Charles County Sheriff's Office has admitted to driving under the influence in St. Mary's County, officials announced. In June, Sgt. Robert Smith was suspended with pay after the sheriff's office learned that he was being charged in the neighboring jurisdiction. The incident was reported on Tuesday, June 11 in Mechanicsville.
