The fire started in the area of Poles Hill and Riverview Road around 10:45 a.m., Gloucester Fire said. Crews struggled to contain the flames as the area was hard to access and the blaze spread because of dry and windy conditions.

Much of the fire was contained around 3:45 p.m., Gloucester Fire said. Crews eventually ceased operations for the night but will continue Tuesday morning.

The fire, which reportedly burned through nine acres, sent smoke into the air that was seen in several surrounding towns.

So far no injuries have been reported and residents are being asked to avoid the area and remain vigilant. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
