Capt. Anthony Duff was shot "more than once," around 9:23 p.m., Monday, Aug. 12, near the area of Henry Street and Dixwell Avenue, said Laurence Grotheer, spokesman for New Haven Mayor Toni Harp.

A 24-year-veteran of the department, Duff called for help saying he had been shot, shortly after ShotSpotter picked up shots fired near the scene, police said.

Duff apparently approached the two suspects when one shot both the Captain and the other suspect, who was killed, Grotheer said.

The shooter, who is still on the run, is described as being a large black male with long dreads/braids, a goatee, and a muscular build, Grotheer said.  He was wearing a black shirt and black pants.

After the shooting, the man escaped on foot toward Henry Street, then to Townsend, police said.

Grotheer said a large police presence, including help from the state police and surrounding agencies, have a tight perimeter around the area, searching every corner, knocking on doors and canvassing the area for the suspect.

The captain, who was shot at least twice, underwent surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital during the early morning hours and is currently in recovery, Grotheer said.

He did not comment on the Duff's condition, who was originally in critical condition before the surgery.

Duff, a high-ranking officer who currently serves as the public information officer for the department, is said to be a popular figure within the department.

The state police released a statement early Tuesday, Aug. 13, saying it is involved in the investigation.

“Following the shooting in New Haven on Monday night, the New Haven Police Department and the New Haven State’s Attorney called on Connecticut State Police to assist in the investigation. State Police is currently assisting on several levels as we work to determine what transpired during the late-night incident.”

The identity of the man who was killed has not been released.
