Icy Snow Slows Traffic on Merritt, I-95

Driving on the Merritt Parkway became treacherous Friday evening as the wet snow that blanketed the area began to freeze. The photo, taken near Exit 46 in Fairfield, shows just how slick and dangerous the road became Friday evening. Traffic on the northbound side came to a near standstill at times as drivers began sliding off the road and into snow banks off the shoulders. Several drivers eventually abandoned the parkway in favor of local roads.

Traffic was moving slowly Friday on Interstate 95 and the Merritt Parkway as well as on surface streets because of the heavy snow, the Connecticut Department of Transportation reported. The snowfall was expected to last until at least 8:30 Friday night, with more accumulation possible later, according to the National Weather Service.
