Robby Casey is sweating out this weekends weather. Casey, the director of the Westport Invitational Soccer Tournament, has 106 teams participating in the 30th annual showdown, which begins Saturday morning. Hes concerned by the wet weekend forecast.
We wont jeopardize anybodys safety, Casey said, but the games will be played in rain. Thunder and lightning will suspend action, but Casey said the turf at the tournament site, Staples High School, can withstand significant amounts of water.
The tournament is the only fundraiser for the Westport Soccer Association. Teams from New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Massachusetts are competing in the tournament, along with squads from throughout Connecticut, including Norwalk, New Canaan, Darien and Easton. Games are 25 minutes and teams compete in age groups from under-9 to under-18. Teams in the 11-, 10- and 9-and-under divisions play indoors.
The tournament runs on the dedication of volunteers. Its like a big jigsaw puzzle, Casey said. Everyone wants to make it work. Tournament play begins at 8 a.m. Saturday. Girls play Saturday and boys on Sunday. The final game kicks off Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
