Swim Meet Honors Norwalk Olympian

Young swimmers competed Saturday in the Marie Corridon Mortell Invitational meet at Norwalk High School. The event was hosted by the Norwalk YMCA's Zeus swim team.

Swimmers ages 9-and-under competed in the meet, whose namesake Mortell won a gold medal in the 4x100 meter relay in the 1948 Olympics. She is the only Norwalk athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics. She died last year at the age of 80.

The meet featured swimmers from Norwalk, Westport, Greenwich and Rye, N.Y. Mortell's grandson was among them. Members of her family were on hand to help celebrate. Zeus head coach Omar Cruz said a similar meet was held last year. This is the first year it was named after Marie.
