Skaters Prepare for Southern CT Open

The 27th annual Southern CT Open will be held at the Darien Ice Rink on April 15, 16 and 17. Three hundred skaters from all over the Northeast will compete in freestyle and dance events wearing dazzling skating costumes as they perform exciting routines to music.

"We encourage the community to come watch the spectacular skating that runs all day long from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.," said Kari Ryan, president of the Skating Club of Southern CT. "Young skaters will certainly be inspired. We urge families to make it an outing by watching the skating and enjoying a great meal at Behind the Net, the new restaurant at the rink." Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for seniors and children over age 6. There is no charge for children under age 6.

Skaters of all ages, including adults, will compete in no test (beginner) to senior level. The Skating Club of Southern CT Junior National competitors Kirstyn Nanista and Brett Mayer will be competing and representing the club. Nanista is from Norwalk, and Mayer is from Stamford.

The Southern CT Open is sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating and is run by parent volunteers and skaters. The Skating Club of Southern CT will welcome nearly 40 judges and officials to critique the skaters and to complete the markings, which result in awards. The judges and officials, many sectional and national judges, travel from all over the country to participate. The Southern CT Open also will feature skating vendors such as Del Arbour, U.S. Icewear and Skaters Landing.

The Skating Club of Southern CT has a rich tradition within the community and began 67 years ago. For more information about the skating club, visit its website at www.skatescsc.com.
