FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Dariens boys and Wiltons girls will be among the teams to watch Tuesday as runners from across Connecticut meet for the State Open cross country championships at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison. Both teams won championships in class meets Oct. 30.
Darien, which went undefeated during the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference regular season, ran away with the Class L championship. The Blue Wave compiled 46 points, 40 ahead of runner-up Naugatuck. Michael Johnson (fifth place) and Charlie Baird (sixth) led a strong 1-2 punch for Darien. Michael Coe (eight), Marshall Huffman (12th) and Alex Ostberg (15th) made up the rest of its top five.
The Blue Wave had the third fastest time among teams that competed in class meets at Wickham Park. Fairfield Prep, which won the Class LL championship, had its top five runners finish in 1:22:50. Danbury, the Class LL runner-up, was next at 1:24:15, and the Blue Wave were at 1:24:52. The title was Dariens second class title in three years. It also won the Class MM title in 2009.
Wilton won its second Class L title in three years. Alosha Southern (second) and Alexandra Fiesel (seventh) led the Warriors, who finished with 69 points. They easily outdistanced Pomperaug, which finished with 132. Wilton had the third fastest combined time among girls teams, trailing only Class MM champion Guilford and Class LL winner Ridgefield. Wiltons top five also included Keiley Gaston (17th), Rebecca Craig (20th) and Gabrielle House (23rd).
Staples will also field its full team. Junior Henry Wynne, the FCIAC champion, finished third in the Class LL championships. Westhills Sam Lagasse, Westons Noah Krassin, Wiltons Spencer Brown and Joel Barlows Logan Fulton will represent their schools.
Greenwich and Darien will compete in the girls race. Individuals running include Staples Caroline Koenig and Westhills Nicole and Alison Ambrosecchio.
