Of those polled who said they were “very interested” or “somewhat interested” in baseball, 42 percent said the Yankees were their favorite team, while 37 percent identified themselves as Boston Red Sox fans. The New York Mets came in third with 8 percent of the vote. No other team had higher than 1 percent.

“The Red Sox may be leading the AL East, but the Yankees still lead in the hearts of Connecticut baseball fans," Douglas Schwartz, director of the Quinnipiac poll, said in a news release. "The Yankees benefit from their lead among young people and women. Unfortunately for Met fans they are still stuck in single digits.”

The numbers are similar to the same poll conducted the last two years. In both 2011 and 2012 the Yankees led the Red Sox in the poll 43 percent to 38 percent, with the Mets in third with 7 percent.

In this year’s poll, the Yankees’ support was strongest in Fairfield County, with 55 percent of fans in the area saying they preferred the Yankees. The Red Sox and Mets tied in Fairfield County, each with 15 percent of the vote.

When broken down by demographic, men in Connecticut tended to prefer the Red Sox, who had 40 percent compared with the Yankees’ 37 percent. Women favored the Yankees 48 percent to 35 percent. The Bronx Bombers were also most popular among younger voters. Half of those polled who were ages 18 to 34 root for the Yankees, versus 36 percent for the Red Sox.
