Nrra Strikes Gold In Massachusetts

The Norwalk Rowing Youth Racing Team won a gold medal and two silvers at the US Rowing Regional Championships in Lowell, Mass. this past weekend.

The 2nd Novice Boys Eight of Ryan Cross (Middlebrook MS), Ryan Lewis (Wilton HS), Adam Worrell (Foundation HS), James Griffiths (Darien HS), Alex Nicoll (Wilton HS), Ben Quantock (Wilton HS), Willem Taverna (Wilton HS), John Thacker (Darien HS), and Charlie Stout (Darien HS) won Gold on Sunday. Jumping out to an immediate lead, they led the entire race with Boston College HS and CRI of Boston chasing them the entire way.

In one of the most exciting races of the weekend, the Norwalk Rowing Junior Boys Varsity Four of Sumner Richter (Wilton), Carson West (Wilton), Matt Koenigsberg (Wilton), Brendan Keevan (Wilton), and Sebastian Van Eck (Wilton) battled it out for the entire 2000 meter course with Bromfield Rowing and Central Crew of New Hampshire. The lead changed hands every 200 meters with no one giving up more than a few feet of lead at a time. A furious sprint in the last 100 meters put Bromfield in front with Norwalk 0.1 seconds behind for the silver.

The last medal won on the weekend was the Novice Girls four of Anastasia Livesay (Wilton), Caroline Demko (Brien McMahon), Kylie O'Connor (Wilton), Madeline Vocke (Wilton) and Adrianna Marino (Norwalk). A strong start put them in second place where they stayed the entire race, finishing with a Silver Medal. This result bodes well for the future as these girls move up to the Varsity team next fall.

A beautiful weekend of racing was had by all on the scenic Merrimac River. The NRRA now goes into its summer season with a huge variety of programs available for youth and adults alike.
