Letter From London: A Strong Finish

John LaCava, the father of Weston rower Nick LaCava, has been providing periodic reports from the 2012 Summer Olympics. This is his final report.

ETON, ENGLAND -- The journey into sports began on the fields in Weston, when our kids were five or six playing soccer and T-ball. Most student’s sports careers end after high school, while a few are able to extend it into college athletics. I feel lucky that Nick was able to continue his athletic endeavor after college and take it to such a grand stage.

Thursday was his last race of the Olympics in the men’s Final B, a race to determine world rankings 7-12. There would be no medals, only the pride of competition. They rowed a good race, getting out in front early but were edged out at the final push  by the French boat. They finished second in the race -- eighth in the world. I am happy for him and for the team.

No, I never thought that my son would be in the Olympics when he was growing up. I don’t think any parent does. Life is full of the unexpected, and you always hope for a strong finish.
