GFA Sails Successfully at the State Championships

It was a outstanding week for the Greens Farms Academy Water Dragons in recent action. On April 25, they raced Branford School and Fairfield Warde off the Pequot Yacht Club in Southport, winning both races easily. On April 27, they headed to Greenwich to race Fairfield Prep and Brunswick and showed good team racing skills and boat handling. GFA led for most of the day's competition, but Brunswick rallied late to grab the win.

On Saturday, the Water Dragons headed to the Coast Guard Academy  to compete in the Connecticut State Championships against 19 other high school teams from Connecticut and New York. GFA sailed well, finishing a respectable 10th overall. Knowing how to sail in strong adverse current, getting a good start, turning to the left side of the course and using good fleet racing tactics were all key in their result. The GFA team sailed consistently, with several Top 10 finishes. Sailing for GFA were juniors Emily Petno of New Canaan, Bridgette Foster of Southport and Jack Kauffman of Darien; sophmore Liz McDermott of New Canaan; and freshmen Andrew McCarthy of Southport and Allie Nixon of Rowayton. Greens Farms Academy won this event last year for the first time.

It was a rough start to the season but the Dragons are showing the potential for a positive future. This recent momentum has gotten the team psyched and excited to stay on top of this power wave.
