Norwalk School System To Restore Cut Staff Positions

NORWALK, Conn. – Due to an increase in state funding to the district for next year, the Norwalk school system will be able to add back several positions that were eliminated by city officials in the city’s final spending plan.

According to interim Superintendent Tony Daddona, as many as a couple of dozen positions are slated to be restored to the 2013-14 school budget, but the final number has not yet been determined.

Among the positions that the district will now be able to fill include an art teacher at Brien McMahon High School, three districtwide reserve teachers, six elementary school library aides, six intervention utility aides and a human resources secretary.

Daddona had sought the additional positions this past winter during the city’s budget preparation season, but they were cut to keep spending down.

The state, however, came up with more than $1 million in additional funding to the city, which will allow Daddona to go back and add in those positions. He plans to speak with city finance officials next week about his plan.

“We can rebuild our budget,” Daddona said Tuesday night during a Board of Education meeting in City Hall.

The school system had sought about $164.9 million to operate the schools but received about $162.3 million.
