NORWALK, Conn. Cars traveling near the Merritt 7 train station Thursday had to make their way through a flooded intersection, the result of a quick, heavy rainstorm that began at about 1 p.m.
A woman who works in the complex said the intersection of Glover Avenue and a parking garage driveway floods whenever "we get a tremendous amount of rain." She guessed that about an inch and a half of rain fell within a half-hour. "The drain can't handle that amount of rain that quickly," she said.
The Weather Channel agrees with her estimation. Although the website doesn't provide hourly statistics, it says 1.46 inches of rain had fallen on Norwalk on Thursday as of 3:17 p.m. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flooding warning for Fairfield County through 5:15 p.m.
The woman said she lives in Wilton, and the end of her road had been flooded before she came in to work. Route 7 was flooded in all the usual spots. Motorists blaming rain for a traffic slowdown on southbound Route 7 at about that time were mistaken: The problem was a car accident.
Rain moved back into Norwalk at about 3:30 p.m.
