Residents Can Dispose of Hazardous Waste

The Wilton Conservation Commission is inviting residents of Norwalk, Darien, Weston, Westport and Wilton to Miller-Driscoll School for Wilton's Annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday. A certified hazardous waste contractor will be at the school to make sure the items are disposed of properly.

"The collection provides residents with a safe avenue for disposing of products that would pose a threat to our environment if thrown in our regular trash or flushed down the toilet," commission chair Kristen Begor said in an email.

According to the Conservation Commission, household hazardous waste is defined as corrosive, flammable, reactive or toxic. Oil-based paints, thinners, pool chemicals, pesticides, mercury fever thermometers and gasoline are common forms of hazardous waste that can become dangerous if not disposed of properly.

Participating in events like the one Saturday provide an opportunity to dispose of these wastes in an environmentally safe manner. A link on the Conservation Committee's website contains a complete list of items that will be accepted and declined during the collection.

The collection will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Proof of residency is required. Contact the Wilton Department of Environmental Affairs for further information at 203-563-0810.

Miller-Driscoll School is located at 217 Wolfpit Road in Wilton.
