New Canaan Woman Helps Catch Norwalk Suspect

NORWALK, Conn. – A New Canaan woman whose purse was grabbed in a Norwalk supermarket Tuesday followed the suspect out of the store and noted the vehicle he was driving, Norwalk Police say. A suspect was stopped by Darien police and arrested after the woman identified him as the thief, Lt. Praveen John said.

The report of a robbery at the Shoprite at 360 Connecticut Avenue came in at 11:37 a.m. The New Canaan woman, who was 63 years old, said she was shopping in the store when a man took her purse out of her cart. She ran after him into the parking lot and watched him get into a Chevy pickup truck with a New Hampshire plate. There was a woman in the passenger seat, and the truck drove south.

Norwalk Police put out a Be On the Lookout alert. Darien police spotted the vehicle on I-95 and stopped it at the closed rest stop on the southbound side, John said. The woman was taken to the scene and identified Michael Colcord, 33, of Laconia, N.H., as the thief.

Colcord was taken back to Norwalk police headquarters, where he admitted taking the purse, John said. Colcord said he got gas at the Mobil station on Route 1 near exit 13 and then got on the highway southbound, according to the account relayed by John. He threw the purse into a trash can at the gas station.

Darien police found the purse at the gas station, John said, but $50 and some credit cards remain missing. Colcord was charged with sixth-degree larceny.
