Joseph M. Santella of South Norwalk, a World War II veteran, died at his home Thursday after a long illness. He was 83 years old.
Santella was born in Norwalk on Oct. 7, 1927, The Norwalk High School graduate served his country in the Navy's "silent service" as an electricians mate aboard the submarine USS Conger, patrolling the Caribbean and South Atlantic for Nazi submarines. He worked as a butcher for many years.
Santella was recently predeceased by his wife of almost 60 years, Mary. He loved fishing, clamming, golf and bowling -- in his prime he was often a 700 Club member. Santella was proud of his Italian-American heritage and was a lifelong member of St. Ann's club.
He is survived by two sons, Joseph Santella and his wife, Cathy, of Trumbull, and Pat Santella and his wife, Kathy, also of Trumbull; two granddaughters and his brother, Michael Santella of Norwalk.
Friends and family may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday , Jan. 30, at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St Joseph Church, 85 S. Main St., with interment at St. John Cemetery. In lieu of mass cards, donations may be made to St. Joseph Church, 85 S. Main St., Norwalk, Ct 06854, or to St. Ann's Italian Club, 16 Hendricks Ave., Norwalk, Ct 06851.
