Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs Dies of Cancer

Co-founder of Apple Inc. Steve Jobs died Wednesday night, succumbing to a seven-year battle with pancreatic cancer, The Wall Street Journal reported. He was 56.

“Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve,” said a statement released by Apple on Wednesday. “His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.”

Jobs, along with co-founder Steve Wozniak, began Apple in 1976. The company went on to produce a line of highly successful personal computers as well as the iPod, iPad and iPhone. Jobs also founded the computer animation company Pixar. In August, Jobs resigned, citing health issues. His successor Tim Cook, the company’s previous chief operating officer, was appointed CEO.

A brief statement on Apple’s website reads, “Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

Apple has specialty stores in Greenwich and Stamford as well as White Plains.
