Democrats nominated Anna Duleep as their candidate to challenge State Rep. Larry Cafero for the 142nd district seat in the state legislature. Gathering last night at Silvermine Elementary School, Duleeps alma mater, Norwalk town clerk Andrew Garfunkel put forth the nomination that was seconded by Chris Potts.
Anna will bring fresh direction, youth and energy to a position that has gotten stale, said Potts. She has experience on the local and regional level and already has a great rapport with our other Democratic representatives. She will solidify Norwalks representation in Hartford.
Accepting the nomination, Duleep questioned whether Caferos responsibilities as House Minority Leader allowed him adequate time to address the needs of Norwalk. She asked how a district that is represented by the highest-ranking Republican in the House at a time when there is a Republican governor could receive so little from Hartford. "How much longer should we listen to Minority Leader Cafero blame his lackluster performance on the Democratic majority?" she asked.
Duleep said her priorities would include increasing revenue through the promotion of heritage tourism, tapping community volunteers as a way to relieve the burden on municipalities and protecting Norwalks investment in education by reversing the brain drain-- the loss of the citys educated work force.
Most of the discussion surrounding our dire economic situation in Connecticut has revolved around cutting programs versus raising taxes, she said. Its time to move beyond that protest budget proposal set forth by Minority Leader Cafero.
Noting that some may label her young or inexperienced, the Harvard graduate and former Norwalk Council member said she would turn 34 this year, the same age Cafero had been when he took office 18 years ago.
