Music therapist gets kids hopping

“Sometimes it’s a total mosh pit,” says Jeffrey Friedberg of his concerts with the Bossy Frog Band. “Everybody’s right up front, dancing like crazy.”

You’re probably picturing an audience full of pierced teenagers sporting mohawks, but most of Jeffrey’s fans are in pigtails (if they even have that much hair). The Bossy Frog band plays for the preschool crowd, bringing original hits like “Bear Hunt” and “Clap Hands” to birthday parties, schools, community centers and libraries across the tri-state area.

We caught up with Jeffrey pre-show at the Darien Community Association as he tuned his banjo, keeping one eye on a baby girl crawling perilously close to the stage. “There are a lot of wires and other dangerous stuff up there,” he said. “Parents need to act as our security guards.”

It makes sense that Jeffrey is as concerned with keeping kids safe as he is with keeping them entertained. In addition to being a banjo, guitar, sax and harmonica virtuoso, he’s a certified music therapist.“I want my music to get kids moving, help them to use their imagination, make them feel good,” he says.

Kids were definitely on their feet once the music started, clapping and stomping like crazy, so Jeffrey’s show was a success. As for the moms, some of them were on their feet, too--but mostly to keep their toddlers from rushing the stage.
