FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. - Porn sells. But free porn particularly when its the number one selling paperback book on the New York Times best-seller list might cost you some time.
Fairfield County residents are clamoring to get their hands on 50 Shades of Grey, the 2011 blockbuster work of erotic fiction by English author E.L. James. Although the book has not been a darling of critics, Fifty Shades of Greys mass appeal has been likened to that of the popular Twilight series. Minus the teenaged vampires, that is, and with decidedly more adult content.
Local libraries are feeling the Grey heat and are having trouble keeping the book on their shelves. Which ones have the longest wait?
- On its website, the Darien library, which owns 19 copies of the book, shows 92 requests for it;
- The Westport library, which owns 20 copies, has 99 people waiting for a chance to read it;
- New Canaan has 44 holds on 9 copies;
- Norwalk owns 23 copies of the book and 44 people are waiting for it;
- But Stamford, which has 23 copies, shows on its website that 113 people are waiting patiently (or not) in line for it;
- The Wilton library has no waiting list for Fifty Shades only because it doesnt own any copies of it.
- And, according to the Fairfield library website, only one copy is up for grabs there but the library's website does not indicate how many readers are waiting for it.
- It looks as if the longest wait is in Greenwich, where library-goers are getting heated about the book: the library owns 41 copies it of, which is good. The bad news is that 139 people are waiting for it.
If interested readers are disinclined to wait for library books to become available, the author, E. L. James, will be signing copies of Fifty Shades of Grey at the Willow Ridge country club in Harrison, NY, Friday, May 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. Tickets to the event are $85.
Porn does, in fact, sell. But patience might be a more virtuous option.
