Sow Again! The Time Is Ripe

How is your vegetable garden looking these days? If you've been diligent with your weeding and harvesting, you should be enjoying tomatoes, zucchini and chard, to name a few. Early onions as well as garlic and shallots are ready to be harvested and dried for storage, and any lettuce still in your garden probably tastes pretty bitter, which means that it's bolted, so now's the time to yank it out and toss into the compost.

If you think the growing season is winding down, think again! Get your seed packets organized, add some compost to the empty spots in your garden and start planting. Carrots, beets, turnips and parsnips should all go in as soon as possible. Peas and chard can go in too, as well as broccoli rabe and cauliflower.

It's a little early to plant a new crop of lettuce and spinach – wait until it's a bit cooler, or keep reading this column and I'll give you a heads up when the time is ripe!

If you can't find seeds in the local stores, try my favorite seed catalogs: The Cook's Garden (800-457-9703), Kitchen Garden Seeds (860-567-6086) and Johnny's Selected Seeds (877-564-6697).
