Say Adieu to the $10,000 Car

New cars aren't getting any cheaper. That might not be surprising, but it does make one reminisce about, say, 30 years ago, when the sticker price of a new Volkswagen Beetle was $1,999. But flash forward to today and you'll be hard pressed to buy a vehicle for less than $10,000.

Some less expensive models, the Nissan Versa and Hyundai Accent among them, are still available in the $9,999 range, but the clock is ticking on that price point's demise. Manufacturers are set to introduce their 2012 models at the New York International Auto Show this week, and industry experts are predicting the manufacturer suggested retail prices (MSRP) of even the cheapest models to skid just over the $10,000 mark.

So for now, you can still eek out a bargain for less than $10,000 but you'll have very few options for the price tag. (You wanted a moon roof? Not happening. Power seats and windows? Ditto.) Oh, and you won't even get a radio.

How much did you pay for your first car? Let me know here.
