It's as inevitable as toilet training and learning to read and write: teenagers will drive cars.
Of course they've heard it before -- they've heard everything before -- but it can never hurt to give your kids a few tips to help them drive safely. The facts speak for themselves: each day in the United States, a classroom worth of teenagers perish in automobile crashes (National Safety Council).
Talk to them before handing over the keys and remind your teen to do the following:
* Turn off their cell phone: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than half of teenagers admit to texting while driving, increasing their risk of a traffic accident by eight times.
* Take extra care at night: The mortality rate in nighttime accidents is three times greater than those during the day. Depth perception, color recognition and peripheral vision are all lowered when the sun sets.
* Reduce their speed: Speeding is the cause of one third of all fatal crashes, not including those occurring on the interstate.
