Keep Your Blossoms Toasty

If this cold weather's getting you down there’s an easy solution. Buy yourself a bunch of fresh flowers next time you’re at the supermarket. Just make sure you keep them warm on the trip home!

Baolin Zheng, flower department manager at Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk, has some advice on how to keep your flowers blooming longer. The first challenge in this arctic weather is to get them home alive. Baolin suggests you “cover the flowers with plastic” when you leave the store and go straight home. “If you have other stops to make, don’t buy flowers,” she says. Flowers like the cold even less than you do.

Spring flowers, guaranteed to lift our spirits, are just starting to appear at  our local florists. Stew Leonard’s has tulips in all colors, “And we have just got daffodils and hyacinths,” she adds.

The best way to prolong the life of your tulips,, according to Baolin, is to cut off half an inch from the bottom of the stems every other day. “And change the water,” she adds. Carnations are an old stand-by because they last for days, and you can extend their life even more by adding a drop of bleach to their water. Baby’s Breath likes a little bleach in its water too. “It makes the flowers plump up,” says Baolin.

So next time you're feeling gloomy, stop at the flower shop. The sight and scent of spring in your home will have you smiling in no time.
