Gluten Free Goodies Tempt All

With eight grandchildren, three of whom turn out to have a gluten allergy, what’s a grandmother to do?  Judy Rusin decided to go to back to school so she could learn to make yummy treats, and in the process she started a business – Nanny’s Treats!

It all began six years ago with her daughter’s baby who wasn’t thriving, and it was so apparent,  even Judy’s 95 year-old mother pointed out that “That baby has a problem!”  Judy’s daughter and son-in-law did their research and decided to eliminate all wheat products from the baby’s diet.  The results were startling.  The baby responded immediately.

A light bulb went on in Judy’s head and she decided to learn more about diets and wheat allergies.  Her research led her to Norwalk Community College where she enrolled in the culinary program and spent hours experimenting with gluten free flours in the college’s baking department.

Today, Judy has launched her business, baking and selling gluten free baked goods.  Among her treats are a Bugs Bunny cake, with carrots and pineapple, chocolate chip cookies and Mexican wedding cakes.  She also sells packages of panko-style breadcrumbs.  Judy uses combinations of rice, potato, tapioca, millet and almond flours in her baked goods, which she currently sells at the Stamford Farmers’ Market in the High Ridge Shopping Center on Wednesdays.

It turned out that Judy’s little grandbaby had autism, but today the healthy 6-year old is mainstreamed in the public schools and doing very well.  The two other grandchildren with the allergy, one with severe intestinal problems and the other with ADHD, have also shown great improvement thanks to the gluten-free diet – and, of course, thanks to Nanny’s Treats.
